Post-Workout Meal

22/01/2024

Nutrients after training are crucial for replenishing muscle glycogen depleted due to physical demands.

What is the goal of the post-workout meal?

  • Reduce protein breakdown in muscles.
  • Increase protein synthesis and stimulate growth.
  • Restore glycogen stores.
  • Improve recovery.

There's often debate about what to eat, but the best combination for a post-workout meal is one that includes both protein and carbohydrates. Proteins will further stimulate protein synthesis, and with the addition of carbohydrates, we reduce the possibility of breakdown or catabolism.

Your meal doesn't have to be complicated to serve its purpose. Simple combinations like whey protein with oats, rice cereal, or cornflakes, along with some fruit, do the job well and don't require much preparation time.

When to eat a post-workout meal?

You've probably heard countless times that you should eat right after training because if you happen to be late, all the benefits of the workout go down the drain. Believe it or not, for the average recreational athlete, the timing of the meal won't make a significant difference in long-term progress, considering that the main factors are overall daily expenditure and macronutrient intake.

Just eat your meal, and you're on the right track.
